Justification for Research Study
This study was important for a number of reasons:
· If children do not receive early intervention for reading problems when they are young, then their reading difficulties will continue over time. Waiting to provide intervention services after years of reading failure does little to remediate students’ reading problems. Utilizing differentiated instructional tools, such as applications on tablet technology can develop the automaticity of basic, literacy skills to prevent reading challenges in the future.
· The use of iPads as a tool for literacy learning has been relatively unexplored (Hutchison, Beschorner, and Crawford, 2012). There is the possibility that applications on the iPad may prove to be a valuable asset for students attempting to master the basic reading subskills necessary for future reading success.
· iPads can be used as instructional tools to differentiate instruction to meet the objectives of the English Language Arts Standards for Reading: Foundational Skills area of the Common Core State Standards for kindergarten. These basic reading skills such as concepts of print, the alphabetic principle, and other basic conventions of the English writing system are necessary and important components of an effective and comprehensive reading program.
